Video Transcript
Hello, and welcome to Kobiton mobile device testing.
In this video, we’ll use VoiceOver during a Kobiton manual test session to navigate an iOS app and review accessibility findings after the session.
VoiceOver is Apple’s screen reader. Kobiton provides controls for using VoiceOver remotely during a manual test session.
First, we’ll launch the test session. Remote VoiceOver navigation requires the iOS device to be connected to a Raspberry Pi with keyboard access configured.
To begin, select the iOS device you want to test that is connected to the Raspberry Pi and click Launch.
The manual test session provides access to the device and the testing tools available for the session.
Next, let’s prepare the app. Apps can be installed from the Install Apps menu. You can install an app by uploading a file, installing from a URL, or searching for an existing app. For this demonstration, I’ll upload a file.
After installation is complete, the app opens on the device and is ready for testing.
Next, we’ll enable VoiceOver. To start using the screen reader, click the person-speaking icon in the navigation bar and enable VoiceOver.
[VoiceOver: “VoiceOver on. Accessibility Sample iOS. Select one accessibility type you prefer.”]
To hear VoiceOver audio during the session, make sure your computer audio is not muted and Lightning Mode is on. A green lightning bolt icon indicates that Lightning Mode is on.
Kobiton also displays the screen reader controls alongside the device. These controls provide the keyboard commands used to interact with VoiceOver remotely.
[VoiceOver: “Touch target size button.”]
As focus moves through the app, VoiceOver announces information about each element.
[VoiceOver: “Back button. Touch target size heading. Normal. Select one accessibility type you prefer.”]
This lets you evaluate the experience provided to someone navigating the app with a screen reader.
[VoiceOver: “Touch target size button. Color contrast button. Normal contrast button. Low contrast button. Low contrast. Select one accessibility type you prefer.”]
[VoiceOver: “Touch target size button. Color contrast button. Speaker outputting high volume. Content labeling. Speaker outputting high volume button.”]
[VoiceOver: “Normal button with text Hello button. Select one accessibility type you prefer.”]
Next, we’ll review the accessibility findings. When testing is complete, disable VoiceOver and end the session.
[VoiceOver: “VoiceOver off.”]
The completed session appears in Session Explorer. If your subscription includes accessibility validations, findings captured during the session appear on the timeline with an A icon.
Select an accessibility finding to view information about the issue that was detected.
From Session Explorer, the completed session can also be used for additional testing workflows, such as creating a test case or baseline session.
When you’re finished with the session, you can navigate back to the Devices window, select a new device, and begin the testing process again.
VoiceOver support in Kobiton lets you test iOS screen reader behavior remotely and review accessibility findings from the completed session.
